Airport Layover Activities for Kids this Winter
Weather has been wreaking havoc on airport travel for families across Canada this winter. Scenes of parents and kids sleeping on the floors of YVR airport have scared away many from booking tickets until the thaw of spring and summer. Of course, not everyone has that luxury, as your household may need to cross the not-so-friendly skies in the winter days and weeks to come. As such, you’re faced with the prospect of cancelled or delayed flights, or other extended layovers. Parents are wondering if there is a better way to keep their young kids engaged in learning activities during this time. They (you) are seeking a better alternative to hours of Roblox and other online games. Fret not, because Plant a Seed & See What Grows has you and your young ones covered.

Your mobile devices can be vessels for toiling time away or they can be leveraged to learn. Choose the latter for your kids during an unexpected airport layover. Our Foundation has compiled a list of apps that will teach children about environmental stewardship in a fun and engaging manner.
Watch Family Movies About Plants and Seeds
At some point during your trip, you and the kids may want to cuddle up around the family tablet to stream an entertaining movie or two. We encourage you to choose options that are entertaining and educational at the same time. Our Foundation has put together a list of popular children’s movies about plants and seeds that will give them a laugh while teaching them valuable lessons about sustainability.
Explore the Culture of the Airport
International airports in Canada have been updated to include installations that honor the culture of their respective regions. For example, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has placed a wide number of art pieces and architectural structures that reflect British Columbia’s diverse landscape and people. The Edmonton International Airport (YEG) boasts an Indigenous Interpretive Centre. All of nine of Canada’s international airports have exhibits in their terminals. Turn your layover into a scavenger hunt for culture, diversity, and environmental stewardship.
