Before you chalk it up as one of those silly days of the month that don’t actually have any meaning, allow us to briefly explain how it all got started. IMD (let’s just abbreviate it) began in 2009 after early childhood educators from Australia and Nepal met at a World Forum event and discussed creating a global celebration centered around outdoor play, creativity, and children’s shared connection to nature. Observed annually, the day encourages children to freely engage in messy, sensory-rich activities involving mud, water, and natural materials as a way to support physical activity, imagination, social interaction, and emotional wellbeing. The celebration has since spread to countries around the world, including Canada, where schools, childcare centers, nature camps, and families often mark the occasion with mud kitchens, obstacle courses, gardening activities, nature walks, and outdoor play events that encourage children to explore and connect with the natural environment in a fun and meaningful way.

While the summary provided above indicates why it can be beneficial to incorporate this day of recognition into your household’s itinerary for the entirety of summer break, we encourage you to read on below. Not only will it provide additional insight, it will also help justify the expense of extra laundry detergent for the weeks and months ahead!

Benefits of Mud Play in Early Childhood That You Should Let Your Child Explore This Summer

Cognitive Development and Academic Growth

Playing in mud can support a child’s cognitive and academic growth by encouraging exploration, experimentation, and hands-on learning in a natural, unstructured environment. As children mix mud, water, sand, and natural materials, they begin to observe cause-and-effect relationships, compare textures and consistencies, and test ideas through trial and error. This type of sensory play strengthens early scientific reasoning, problem-solving skills, and creativity, while also supporting language development as children describe what they are doing and make sense of their discoveries.

As a parent observing the activity, you can promote mathematical and scientific thinking, critical thinking, and open-ended play during mud activities by asking thoughtful, guiding questions rather than directing the play. Questions like “What happens if we add more water?” or “How can we make this mud structure even stronger?” encourage your child to experiment, measure, and adjust their approach based on results. You can also introduce simple concepts such as volume, weight, and comparison by noticing differences in mud thickness or how objects sink and float, while still allow your child the freedom to explore creatively. By supporting curiosity without over-instruction, you help child develop deeper reasoning skills and a stronger foundation for lifelong learning.

Mental Wellbeing and Emotional Regulation

Playing in mud can support a child’s mental wellbeing and emotional regulation by providing a calming, sensory-rich experience that encourages present-moment awareness and free expression. The tactile nature of mud play allows children to release energy, reduce stress, and engage in imaginative, unstructured activities that help them process emotions in a natural way. This type of outdoor play can also foster resilience, as children learn to navigate messiness, adapt to changing conditions, and stay engaged even when things do not go as planned.

You can help promote mental wellbeing and emotional regulation during mud play by creating a supportive environment that values exploration over cleanliness (don’t forget that laundry detergent!) and outcomes. Encouraging your child to notice how they feel while playing, take breaks when needed, and express excitement or frustration in healthy ways helps build emotional awareness. You can also model calm, positive responses to mess and unpredictability, reinforcing that discomfort or disorder is manageable and temporary. By allowing your child the freedom to lead their play while offering gentle emotional guidance, you help strengthen self-regulation skills and confidence in handling emotions.

Fun Fact: Mud play is also linked to natural mood benefits due to compounds found in soil Soil contains harmless environmental microbes, including Mycobacterium vaccae, which has been studied for its potential effects on the immune system and brain chemistry. Research suggests that exposure to this bacterium may help stimulate pathways associated with serotonin production, a neurotransmitter often referred to as the “feel-good” chemical because of its role in regulating mood, focus, and emotional balance. While the science is still developing and effects are likely indirect and complex, time spent playing in natural environments like mud can contribute to reduced stress, improved mood, and a greater sense of well-being in children through both biological and psychological pathways.

Physical Health and Motor Skills Development

Playing in mud can support a child’s physical health and motor skills development by encouraging active, whole-body movement in an engaging and natural environment. Digging, scooping, pouring, shaping, crawling, and balancing in uneven outdoor terrain help strengthen both fine and gross motor skills, improve coordination, and build core strength and stability. This type of play also promotes physical endurance and spatial awareness, as children learn how their bodies move through different textures and resistance levels while interacting with natural materials. Furthermore, studies suggest that exposure to safe, natural soil microbes helps build more robust immune systems, decreasing the vulnerability to childhood asthma and allergies among other conditions.

Allow your children to dig, build, and manipulate mud with their hands and simple tools supports dexterity and coordination, while reminding them to wash hands afterward reinforces healthy hygiene habits. You can also encourage movement-based challenges such as carrying mud, balancing along edges, or shaping objects, all of which enhance strength and coordination. By balancing freedom of exploration with basic safety and hygiene practices, parents help children gain both physical development benefits and healthy exposure to natural environments.

Deepens Connection to the Environment

Playing in mud can help a child develop a stronger environmental connection by fostering direct, hands-on interaction with natural elements like soil, water, plants, and insects. Through this type of play, children begin to understand that mud is part of a larger ecosystem and learn how weather, terrain, and living organisms all interact to shape the natural world around them. This early exposure helps build curiosity about nature and encourages a sense of belonging within the environment rather than seeing it as something separate from themselves.

You can promote lessons about respect for nature during mud play by gently guiding your child to observe and appreciate the natural setting while also taking care not to damage it. Encouraging behaviors such as avoiding harm to plants, being mindful of small creatures, and returning natural materials to their original place helps reinforce the idea that outdoor spaces should be treated with care. You can also model respectful interaction by showing enthusiasm for nature, explaining simple ecological relationships, and emphasizing that enjoying mud play and protecting the environment can go hand in hand.

We hope everything above was helpful in the mission of getting your child excited about playing in mud, although they probably don’t require much convincing. In fact, this article was probably more for your benefit!
