The good news, is that there is. And through this knowledge comes the opportunity to teach your child about truly sustainable gardening practices. Let\u2019s get to it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4 Practical Tips to Maintaining a Household Food Garden That Can Thrive Through Dry Seasons<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Drought Tolerant Vegetables<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a number of nutritious (and tasty!) food crops that thrive in Canada\u2019s moderate climate, yet are able to weather extended bouts of dry weather. By including them in your family garden you will enjoy a healthy balance of plants that can keep your child engaged with each season. Popular varieties include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Corn<\/li><li>Lima beans<\/li><li>Mustard greens<\/li><li>Pole beans<\/li><li>Summer squashes<\/li><li>Sunflowers<\/li><li>Most herbs (rosemary, lavender, sage, thyme, oregano, lemon verbena, etc.)<\/li><li>Most peppers (bell peppers, etc.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Add More Mulch<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Droughts are accompanied by municipal watering restrictions. To ensure the health of your soil and plants, reduce the required amount of water by up to 50% with a <a href=\"https:\/\/seewhatgrows.org\/us\/water-community-garden-summer-short-supply\/\">2 to 3-inch layer of\u00a0mulch<\/a> made of either\u00a0grass clippings, pine needles or mulch-bark.
