La calidad de la col rizada disminuye r\u00e1pidamente en climas c\u00e1lidos, por lo que no solo tolera el fr\u00edo, sino que lo requiere. La col rizada puede incluso crecer a temperaturas bajo cero de hasta -20 \u00b0C y se puede cosechar mientras est\u00e1 cubierta de nieve. La col rizada debe plantarse temprano en las regiones donde el clima c\u00e1lido llega antes que en otras provincias. Es \u00f3ptimo plantar col rizada como cultivo de oto\u00f1o (siembra a mediados de julio) para que tenga la oportunidad de madurar en clima fr\u00edo. La col rizada responde bien en un suelo f\u00e9rtil compuesto de arena, arcilla y humus enriquecido con materia org\u00e1nica. La planta tambi\u00e9n se beneficia del nitr\u00f3geno, as\u00ed que aseg\u00farese de preparar el suelo mezclando compost de hojas enriquecido con esti\u00e9rcol y turba. La col rizada debe plantarse en una zona del jard\u00edn que est\u00e9 expuesta a partes iguales de sol y sombra. Su bancal de col rizada debe cubrirse con mantillo de hierba, paja y compost para mantener el suelo fresco y conservar la humedad \u00f3ptima. A la hora de cosechar, recuerde que la col rizada est\u00e1 en su mejor momento (m\u00e1s nutritiva <em>y<\/em> sabroso) cuando se le permite madurar con la helada, lo que convierte su almid\u00f3n en az\u00facar natural.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Sin embargo, este cultivo rico en vitaminas A y C tambi\u00e9n crece con el calor, lo que las convierte en verdaderas sobrevivientes de todas las estaciones. De cualquier modo, planta tus berzas pensando en su maduraci\u00f3n en clima fr\u00edo para que tu jard\u00edn permanezca de un verde exuberante (\u00a1mediante una combinaci\u00f3n de col rizada y berzas!) en invierno. La preparaci\u00f3n del suelo, la siembra, el cultivo y la cosecha de las berzas son casi id\u00e9nticos a los de la col rizada, pero estas hojas prefieren una mayor exposici\u00f3n al sol, as\u00ed que elige tu terreno en consecuencia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Debido a que no tienen una piel tan gruesa, requieren de mayor atenci\u00f3n, incluida la exposici\u00f3n m\u00e1xima al sol, para sobrevivir a un invierno fr\u00edo. El suelo para este cultivo debe ser franco (arena, arcilla y mantillo enriquecido con materia org\u00e1nica) con un pH neutro a \u00e1cido, labrado y mezclado con una capa de compost de 2 a 4 pulgadas. Este pariente de la cebolla y el ajo, rico en vitaminas A y C, puede soportar las heladas m\u00e1s intensas.
