The concern <a href=\"https:\/\/kidscreen.com\/2021\/07\/20\/us-parents-worry-kids-have-lost-social-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">has grown<\/a> since the events of 2020\/2021 placed children into isolation from peers, which has had a reverberating impact into present day. Studies have found that those who were youngest (4-5 year olds) during that period <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2022\/may\/18\/younger-children-most-affected-by-covid-lockdowns-new-research-finds#:~:text=The%20youngest%20children%20have%20been,their%20first%20year%20at%20school.\">have been most affected<\/a> when it comes to social development during their first years at school. As a result, parents and educators are wondering if there is anything they can do to help children form friendships without it being forced. Kids respond better when relationships are grown organically, like gardens. Using that metaphor as a jumping point, our Foundation recommends the integration of school gardens to foster an environment that is conducive to, well, making friends. Here&#8217;s how!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3 Ways School Gardens Can Help Children Develop Friendships with Their Peers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>To Love Others, We Must First Love Oneself<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This age old truism is as true in adolescence as it is in our older years. Children have a hard time connecting with their peers if they have low self esteem. <a href=\"https:\/\/seewhatgrows.org\/fr\/community-garden-grow-besides-food\/\">Recent research<\/a> show\u00a0that school gardening programs can have a direct impact on boosting self esteem in addition and improving other emotional and behavioral health cues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Furthermore, studies show that when children have contact with soil during activities like digging and planting, they have <strong>improved moods<\/strong>, better learning experiences and <strong>decreased anxiety<\/strong>. Most important, the <strong>self-esteem<\/strong> a child gets from eating a perfect cucumber that he grew himself is priceless.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/parents\/thrive\/gardening-with-kids-how-it-affects-your-childs-brain-body-and-soul\">PBS Kids<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When children are confident and feel better about themselves, they are more likely to be open to connecting with others in and outside of their class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>School Gardening Builds Youth Social Skills and Can Resolve Conflict<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collaborative and cooperative effort of managing a school garden with fellow students <strong>encourages positive interpersonal communication and engagement<\/strong> between young peers. It can also help resolve conflict that can occur on any given day in a class. A study from the\u00a0<strong>Centre national d'information sur la biotechnologie (NCBI)<\/strong>\u00a0found that <a href=\"https:\/\/seewhatgrows.org\/fr\/key-benefits-outdoor-learning-education-children-teens\/\">75-93% of children<\/a> reported that an outdoor learning activities (like school gardening)\u00a0calm them down when they are angry. When thoughts are calm and collected, kids better engage, interact and learn from one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Breaks Barriers of Perceived Differences<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children living with physical and\/or cognitive challenges often find it very difficult to connect with their peers and form friendships. While great strides have been made to foster a more inclusive generation of adolescents, children with limited abilities are often excluded from many social situations, in and outside of school.\u00a0By bringing children together in <a href=\"https:\/\/seewhatgrows.org\/fr\/how-to-make-your-community-school-garden-even-more-inclusive\/\">inclusive gardening programs<\/a>, schools create environments that\u00a0promote social interaction for all involved.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/her.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/23\/6\/952.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Une \u00e9tude<\/a>\u00a0of children with &#8220;disabilities&#8221; who\u00a0participated\u00a0in gardening found that their nonverbal communication skills and situational\u00a0awareness\u00a0improved. These enhanced skills help them better interact with peers. As a result, they are better able to make connections and form relationships. Further, children of differing abilities who may not grasp with those with disabilities are going through have an opportunity to be more compassionate.
