  • Breathe in oxygen like animals and use sunlight
    \nduring the day for energy (photosynthesis)<\/li>\n
  • Breathe in carbon dioxide at night and expel
    \noxygen (part of the global oxygen cycle that enables all life except for a few
    \ntypes of bacteria that don\u2019t require oxygen to live)<\/li>\n
  • Use nutrients from soil and water as well as
    \nsunlight to grow<\/li>\n
  • Reproduce by seeds (sexual reproduction) and\/or
    \nby cuttings (pieces from one plant can grow into other mature plants that are
    \nthe same as the original plant \u2013 asexual reproduction)<\/li>\n
  • Can \u201csequester\u201d carbon dioxide to reduce
    \npollution (role of rain forests and thee boreal forests) <\/li>\n
  • Many animals must eat plants to grow and

      \ntime you make a visit \u2013 if possible record the temperature and weather
      \nconditions, phase of the moon, season of the year<\/li>\n
    • Good scientists are respectful \u2013 allow everyone
      \nthe space to see\/observe; use your eyes first treat plants\/animals\/natural
      \nplaces with respect<\/li>\n
    • Good scientists use their senses: look and
      \nlisten, practice gentle touch, careful smelling and taste only when an adult
      \nsays it\u2019s okay to do so<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Position the leaf, underside up, under one layer
        \nof paper \u2013 the leaf should be visible through the paper<\/li>\n
      • Trace the outline of the leaf with a crayon,
        \nthen rub the broad side of the crayon across the leaf within the outline of the
        \nleaf \u2013 you should see the leaf veining in the rubbing<\/li>\n
      • Looks for different leaf shapes, patterns and
        \nsizes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        \npoems (see below); draw a map of the observation space and update it with each
