Starting or joining a community garden can be one of the most rewarding experiences around. The thought of it alone induces\u00a0images of bright sunny days,\u00a0working in the soil with neighbors, friends, and loved ones, and harvesting bountiful\u00a0organic crops that will thrive for generations. It can be all of that. However, it also comes with\u00a0a set of challenges.\u00a0Since such projects are dear to our Foundation’s heart, we are\u00a0using this week’s blog post to address some of these potential challenges along with solutions\u00a0so that your experience is only enhanced.<\/p>\n

5\u00a0Challenges in Managing a Community Garden and How to Plow Through Them<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

1. Getting approval to start a garden<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you are still in the planning process then your biggest challenge\u00a0likely is getting approval. Before contacting your local municipality or school board (if the garden is on neighborhood school grounds<\/a>) start a committee of community individuals with varying levels of knowledge, skills, and abilities that will speak to\u00a0managing a successful community garden. This committee\u00a0can work to\u00a0choose a prime location (and alternatives), put a formal plan in place, and present\u00a0it to “governing” bodies for approval. 2.\u00a0Securing funding<\/strong><\/p>\n

Community gardens need not be an expensive endeavor, but they do require some start-up and maintenance funding.\u00a0There may be a budget in place with your local municipality (or school board) to\u00a0support such things, but even\u00a0without, there are other options.\u00a0Have your committee put together a sponsorship package<\/strong> and present it to local area businesses that can either contribute financially\u00a0to it\u00a0or by providing items necessary to starting and maintaining the garden, such as seeds, soil, and construction materials. You’ll find that many local businesses will be more than happy to contribute to such a worthy cause. There may also be\u00a0organizations in place in your area that can help\u00a0in this capacity.<\/p>\n

3. Deciding upon which\u00a0vegetables or flowers\u00a0to grow<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another head-scratcher for establishing a successful community garden involves the types of crops to grow given the climate in question. Thankfully, there are many seed options that will accommodate the moderate climates of North American cities, provinces, and states. Refer to this article<\/a> on five crops that grow well\u00a0in community gardens and you will be well on your way to\u00a0harvesting a very\u00a0bountiful\u00a0garden in your locale.<\/p>\n

4. Security<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the most part, keeping your community garden grounds secure at night is of little concern. Since communaut\u00e9<\/em> is the key, the sanctity of the grounds tends to be respected by everyone. Nonetheless, it may be appropriate to select your garden plot in a zone with adequate lighting<\/strong> (street\/sidewalk lights). If none exists, consider installing warm-toned LED\u00a0lamps on posts surrounding the\u00a0garden – there are even solar powered options. A sturdy fence<\/strong> should also be constructed to discourage \u201csamplers\u201d of your produce – including animals. If your community has a neighborhood watch<\/strong> in place include the garden on the evening route and encourage all local area residents to\u00a0keep an eye on it.\u00a0Post a highly visible hotline contact<\/strong> (number or email) on a sign fronting the community garden should a\u00a0neighbor notice anything that requires immediate attention.<\/p>\n

5. Getting the kids in the community interested<\/strong><\/p>\n

A community garden is not a short term project. It is something that you want to pass down from generation to generation. To accomplish this, you need to spark a passion for organic gardening\/farming\u00a0with the community’s\u00a0younger generations so that they get involved now, and take the torch when it is their time. This all starts with getting them interested in the\u00a0notion at an early age. Start by\u00a0having them read up on the concept with these five fun and highly recommended organic gardening books for kids<\/a>. For the more tech-savvy (aren’t they all these days?) these top organic farming and gardening apps<\/a> will have them jumping on your (their?) smartphones and tablets to manage their own virtual community gardens before joining you in the real one. Of course, the most effective method\u00a0to get\u00a0the neighborhood youth interested in community gardening comes from leading by example<\/strong>. When they see you all out there together, creating something tangible, nutritious, and tasty, they will feel the natural urge to join in on the fun.<\/p>\n
